The action, during the whole reading, is a single story, narrated from Carrie’s point of view.
They made me believe that I reached far deeper the core of this story. I took notice and enjoyed the writing complex techniques the author used. So calling this novel a “prequel”, I think, is questionable. While the plot begins in the present, shortly after the end of “We Were Liars”, with Johnny’s desire to be told more about the Sinclairs and the roots of their hereditary way of being, the story he is told is narrated in his mother’s early teenage years. The story was created as an embedded narrative. “Family of Liars” is the very anticipated prequel of “We Were Liars” by E. I’ll never forget this feeling… but I don’t think I want to either. Reading “Family of Liars” was like having ice and fire running through my veins at the same time. Another Sinclair generation, but the same old liars. Numbing herself with prescription codeine and filched sleeping tablets, Carrie finds comfort in visits from Rosemary's palpable, talkative ghost. Though the rest of her family seems to have moved on, 17-year-old Carrie still grieves for her youngest sister, Rosemary, who drowned the previous summer at age 10. Centered on the original Liars' mothers as teens in 1987, the story is narrated by Carrie, the eldest of the three surviving Sinclair sisters, in response to a request for details about "the absolute worst thing you ever did, back then." The bulk of the action unfurls on and around Beechwood, the wealthy family's private island off the Massachusetts coast. Lockhart returns for another look behind the privileged Sinclair family's gleaming facade in this absorbing prequel to 2014's We Were Liars.
